چکیده

In the preceding chapters we discussed the central role that spatial and temporal variability play in ecological systems, the importance of addressing these explicitly within ecological analyses and the resulting need to carefully consider spatial and temporal scale and scaling. Landscape ecology is the science of linking patterns and processes across scale in both space and time. Thus landscape ecology is, in a real sense, the foundational science for addressing the central issues of sensitive dependence of ecological process on spatial and temporal variability. This chapter reviews the historical origins and evolution of landscape ecology, discusses its current scope and limitations, and then anticipates the following chapter by looking forward to identify how the field could best expand to address the central challenges of ecological prediction in spatially complex, temporally disequilibrial, multi-scale ecological systems. Landscape ecology has emerged as an integrative, eclectic discipline, focusing explicitly on spatial structure and dynamics of landscape systems (Turner 1987). Traditionally, ecological science has largely been limited to the study of relationships between the structure and function of entities assumed for simplicity to be spatially homogeneous and temporally stable (Pickett and Cadenasso 1995). Landscape ecology, in contrast, views spatial heterogeneity as a prime causal factor in ecological interactions. Pickett and Cadenasso (1995) state that the primary insight to emerge from landscape ecology is the realization that spatial heterogeneity at various

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...

Landscape Ecology in North America: Past, Present, and Future

Landscape ecology offers a spatially explicit perspective on the relationships between ecological patterns and processes that can be applied across a range of scales. Concepts derived from landscape ecology now permeate ecological research across most levels of ecological organization and many scales. Landscape ecology developed rapidly after ideas that originated in Europe were introduced to s...

Urban Landscape Ecology: Past, Present, and Future

Cities are home to more than half of the world population. Cities have been the centers of economic and social developments, as well as sources of many major environmental problems. Cities are created and maintained by the most intense form of human-nature interactions. Cities are spatially extended, complex adaptive systems—which we call landscapes. The future of humanity will increasingly rel...

A Trivalent Approach to the Quality of the “Khoshk” River Landscape in Shiraz

By considering certain factors like those mentioned by Ian Thompson (2005) in his definition of landscape, i.e. ecology, community and delight, in designing landscapes, one can find the vocation more applicable and useful. City rivers can play a very important role with regard to such values. In fact, the presence of nature and wildlife could not only be the lifeline of a city, but also a facto...

Modeling Past Episodes of Erosion in the Lake Orūmiye (Urmia) Basin: Analogues for Future Landscape Dynamics

During the Holocene Lake Orūmiye has been subjected to significant changes in climate. These have impacted the surround vegetation and runoff, and erosion rates of the surrounding basin. Shifts in seasonal rainfall from winter to summer dominated patterns have resulted in dramatic changes in the Orūmiye Basin’s vegetation cover from grass to shrub dominated communities. The degree of ground sur...
